Schrodinger’s Cat: The Main Cause of Stress for Founders

Nimrod Vromen, CEO of founder advisory firm Consiglieri, explains how the main source of stress for founders is like the Schrodinger's cat analogoy.

In this insightful video, we delve into the profound stress experienced by startup founders, focusing on a compelling analogy: Schrödinger’s cat. Imagine a company, much like Schrödinger’s cat hidden from view, simultaneously alive with potential and on the brink of demise.

If you’re unfamiliar with Schrödinger’s cat, Nobel Prize-winning Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger created this mental experiment in 1935. Essentially, a cat is placed in a chamber, hidden from view, with a hammer, a vial of hydrocyanic acid and a very small amount of radioactive substance.  If just a single atom of the radioactive substance decays during the test period, it causes a mechanism to trip the hammer, breaking the vial of poisonous gas and causing the cat to die. So while the cat is hidden from view, it’s unknown if that cat is alive or dead. You can say that it has the potential for both of these realities to be true at the same time – since the final state is still hidden.

So now if you look at Startup founders, it’s like they have to navigate two different realities until the final state is revealed. On one hand, their company may be perceived as dying by conventional business metrics—running out of funds, dwindling profits, and imminent layoffs. Yet, on the other hand, they must exude unwavering confidence and vitality, projecting an image of the most vibrant and promising enterprise to attract investors and sustain their vision.

This duality creates an immense burden on founders’ mental well-being. They grapple with the isolation of leadership, knowing their company’s precarious state while outwardly projecting optimism and assurance.

Through this video, Nimrod Vromen explores this profound dissonance experienced by founders, shedding light on the core source of mental health challenges within the startup ecosystem. Vromen is founder and CEO of Consiglieri – a go-to advisory firm for fast-track tech companies.
