Blended Teams Are the New Secret Weapon for Startup Success

Raphael Ouzan, Founder & CEO of A.Team, shares his insights on why blended teams - combining core employees with on-demand experts - is the key to building successful companies

Blended Teams Are the New Secret Weapon for Startup Success

In a time when artificial intelligence is reshaping how companies operate, the way startups build their teams is undergoing a radical transformation. Raphael Ouzan, Founder & CEO of A.Team, sees a fundamental shift in how successful companies are structuring their workforce – moving away from traditional employment models toward what is called the “blended teams.”

The New Reality of Building Teams in an AI-First World

“We’re in a very strange time in history,” Ouzan reflects. “On one hand, you’ve got the past few years that have seen a very radical change in the way that technology companies are valued, both by the public market and therefore by the private markets, as well as the unbelievable growth of the potential impact of technologies such as generative AI that are putting every company pretty much back to early stage.”

This dynamic creates a unique challenge. Companies face mounting pressure from boards and investors to be more efficient with headcount, while simultaneously dealing with an acute shortage of specialized talent. As Ouzan points out, “Even the greatest companies on the planet, like Google, are under threat with their core business model that we never thought could be disrupted.”

The Rise of the Blended Team Model

The solution, according to Ouzan, lies in making workforce structure more flexible and adaptable. “We’ve seen the emergence of blended teams,” he explains, “where leading companies from nimble startups to tech giants like Google, X, are adopting a new model. They maintain a core team of versatile professionals who deeply understand the company’s overall mission and operations, while bringing in specialized experts as needed for specific projects or challenges.”

These experts might join for varying periods – six months, a year, or even longer – depending on the project’s needs. “That blended team model has enabled companies to accomplish so much more with a smaller headcount,” Ouzan explains, “but also help grow and cross-pollinate new ideas, best practices, tooling and so on with the teams and providing perspectives.”

This approach represents a significant shift from traditional team building methods. It’s becoming particularly crucial in the AI era, where the gap between having an idea and executing it at scale has never been more challenging. “The classic way of thinking of in-house or offshore or contract being separate things, plus service providers being those separate circles that have very little overlap, is now very much shifting,” Ouzan notes. Instead, companies are asking themselves: “How do I build the absolute best team to accomplish an ambitious milestone and get to value?” This mindset transcends traditional organizational boundaries, focusing instead on assembling the most nimble, expert, multifaceted group that can deliver results quickly, regardless of employment status.

Upskilling in the Era of Rapid AI Evolution

When it comes to upskilling in an AI-first world, traditional approaches are falling short. “Upskilling has always been an issue for technical teams and AI is essentially accelerating the problem in a very significant way,” Ouzan notes. The challenge lies in connecting various aspects of AI implementation – from data science to engineering for scale – while maintaining a product-focused mindset.

“What we’ve seen some of the best companies do is do that upskilling not just by learning online or courses, because the best practices in many cases do not actually exist,” he explains. Instead, companies are bringing together people with different types of expertise, even if it’s not in a permanent capacity.

The Future of Startup Building

Looking ahead, Ouzan sees a future where agility and expertise combine in new ways. “We’re going to see an increasing amount of very small teams with a lot of surrounding help, a lot of support externally that will accomplish absolutely unbelievable valuations and value creation.”

This evolution represents more than just a temporary solution to current challenges. “We’re no longer going to be in those cycles where you have like 20 years to implement Agile,” Ouzan predicts. “We’re going to be in those cycles that are much faster, where we need incredible agility, we need the ability to invest and divest from different positions very quickly.”

The message is clear: success isn’t just about who you hire – it’s about how effectively you can blend different types of expertise to create high-performing, adaptable teams.
